Oxford Stone Inspiration

Monday, 15 January 2018 15:10:32 Europe/London

This week we shine the light on a dark taupe colour, inspired by cottages in the pretty Cotswold villages of Oxfordshire – Oxford Stone No. 286 by Farrow&Ball.

*TIP: For best results, pair with Mid Tones Primer & Undercoat.

It is the darkest of Farrow&Ball's Red Based Neutrals and sits contentedly with both Joa’s White and Dimity for a pared down neutral scheme. Brimming with warmth and an unmatchable depth, the subtle richness of Oxford Stone creates an earthy and uplifting finish from top to bottom, sweeping across woodwork and walls.

As well as neutral schemes, Oxford Stone works particularly well as a contrast colour in a dark colour scheme. Try with Mahogany and Dead Salmon.

As full stockists for Farrow&Ball paint, we love discussing colour and helping customers out with decision making. Oxford Stone is a particularly popular kitchen colour with all of our customers, who choose it for its warm undertones that work specifically well with woodwork.

5 TOP FARROW&BALL COLOURS OF 2017

Friday, 5 January 2018 11:47:21 Europe/London

A round-up of the most popular Farrow&Ball colours for 2017

As difficult it is to choose just a few of the extraordinary Farrow&Ball colours, over the past year, as full stockists of the 132 unmatched shades, we have noticed that the following colours have been most popular among our customers.

farrow&ball, farrow and ball, paint, decorating, paint brush, lichen

Pigeonfront door

This strong blue grey was one of the most popular colours that our customers chose in 2017.  A contemporary shade, particularly suited for use in darker spaces such as studies and panelled rooms, it is also incredibly popular on front doors, for a modern country style entrance to the home.

Pigeon No. 25 by Farrow&Ball works particularly well in a colour scheme with bold colours, such as Down Pipe & Black Blue, to create a sophisticated dark interior with a contemporary twist.

Stiffkey Bluekitchen cabinets

An inky blue, named after the local Norfolk beach where the mud, along with the cockles, share a particular deep navy hue. This blue shade has been particularly popular with kitchen cabinets and islands all throughout 2017, thus making its way to our top 5 Farrow&Ball shades of the past year.

Stiffkey Blue has a traditional feel to it, and, when used in well-lit areas of the home, appears even bluer, working wonderfully when contrasted with Ammonite.

Green Smoke

Green smoke is a dark and smoky green, particularly popular with interiors in 2017. It has an irresistibly inviting deepness and weathered familiarity, while evoking calm and serenity when used inside.

Dark and moody interiors trends are definitely here to stay, and Green Smoke is a colour that has proven to give any room that contemporary twist. For best results, pair with other bold shades such as Off Black and Studio Green.

Brassica

Brassica No. 271 is a warm shade that lifts cold feeling rooms without being overtly red. Don't be afraid to use this bold colour with its beautiful rich lavender tones. It's a very feminine colour in light areas, and is such a warm shade, it will really lift an otherwise cold feeling room.

For a contemporary feel, it is often combined with Calluna No. 270 and/or Strong White No. 2001, giving out charming, feminine vibes.

Black Blue

As we mentioned previously, deep and sophisticated hues, such as the dark but inviting Black Blue, have been extremely popular in 2017. Black Blue takes its name from the two essential pigments that make up its rich colour. This deep shade appears much bluer when seen in large areas and especially when used in Full Gloss finish. When painted on small areas, or contrasted with a bright white, it will appear almost black in colour. This saturated tone can feel incredibly sophisticated and is perfect for those with a discerning eye for colour.

Depending on the effect that you would like to achieve at your home, pair with light colours such as Shaded White & Bone or, for a darker colour scheme, try with Purbeck Stone and Mole’s Breath.

Lichen No. 19 Inspiration

Wednesday, 20 December 2017 12:06:27 Europe/London

farrow&ball, farrow and ball, paint, decorating, paint brush, lichen

This week we are drawing inspiration from a mid aged green - Lichen No.19 by Farrow&Ball. This calm and muted green has a subtle feel to it due to its underlying blue tone, and is named after the ever changing, subtle colour of creeping algae, which ages stone so beautifully. Lichen is perfect for use in the garden where it feels at one with nature.

TIP: For best results, pair with Mid Tones Primer and Undercoat.

Colour Schemes

Lichen No. 19 works particuraly well with Traditional Neutrals, such as Slipper Satin and Lime white, due to their subtle green undertones, creating a soft colour scheme.

Lichen also works wonderfully as a darker accent to the delicate green Vert de Terre No. 234.

Eating Room Red No. 43 Inspiration

The deep blackened pigmentation of Farrow&Ball’s Eating Room Red gives a rich burgundy finish with a wonderfully aged feel. This lovely shade takes its name from the colouring of the red damasks so popular in dining rooms in the mid-19th century and reads almost like a saturated purple if you compare it to the more modern looking Incarnadine.

Go creative with sheen

Tuesday, 24 October 2017 12:31:16 Europe/London

Unwritten rules about the way many of us decorate our homes dictate that trims should be painted in high gloss with ceilings in bright matt white, for example. But the truth is that you can be as creative with sheen as you are with colour and use it to your advantage. For instance, the chalky matt nature of Estate Emulsion would allow you to disguise uneven walls, while the new Modern Eggshell would allow you to highlight your favourite pieces of furniture. To explain the advantages of unusual use of sheen, we have put together a simple finishes guide, containing the basics of finishes and where to use them. Then we go on to explain how you can add a twist to your home with a little play with sheen.

Simple finishes guide:

estate emulshion, estate eggshell, full gloss

Estate Emulsion creates the signature chalky matt finish, making it suitable for your interior walls and ceilings throughout the home.  (2% sheen)

Estate Eggshell is a very durable silk finish, especially suited to metal, wood and kitchen cabinets. (20% sheen)

Dead Flat is a traditional, very flat matt finish suited best to interior wood, plaster and metal surfaces. (2% sheen)

modern emulsion & modern eggshell

Modern Emulsion is a high performance interior walls and ceilings paint, and is the perfect alternative to Estate Emulsion due to its slightly higher sheen.  (7% sheen)

Modern Eggshell extremely durable mid sheen finish, especially suited to floors, staircases, kitchen cabinets and interior metal. (40% sheen)

exterior eggshell

Exterior Eggshell similar to Estate Eggshell, it is a very durable silk finish, but  suited best to exterior wood and metal. (20% sheen)

Full Gloss is the most durable high gloss finish, especially suited to interior and exterior wood and metal. (95% sheen)

WHAT TO PAINT

Front Doors are a brilliant place to start experimenting. Try Full Gloss finish with 95% sheen for a striking entrance or opt for a relaxed first expression with the not-so-bold Exterior Eggshell (20% sheen)

Furniture such as the outside of wardrobes or cupboards would look quirky with a flat matt on the outside – Dead Flat has only 5% finish, and Full Gloss within, adding a secret pocket of sheen.

Bathrooms & Kitchens are the place to use the mould resistant Modern Emulsion. Combine this hardy finish with Modern Eggshell on cabinetry and trim for a noticeable shift from matt walls to mid sheen woodwork.
