This week we are drawing inspiration from a mid aged green - Lichen No.19 by Farrow&Ball. This calm and muted green has a subtle feel to it due to its underlying blue tone, and is named after the ever changing, subtle colour of creeping algae, which ages stone so beautifully. Lichen is perfect for use in the garden where it feels at one with nature.

TIP: For best results, pair with Mid Tones Primer and Undercoat.

Colour Schemes

Lichen No. 19 works particuraly well with Traditional Neutrals, such as Slipper Satin and Lime white, due to their subtle green undertones, creating a soft colour scheme.

Lichen also works wonderfully as a darker accent to the delicate green Vert de Terre No. 234.

For a more contemporary feel, pair Lichen with dark & moody shades such as Off Black and Studio Green.

Go bold with floral patterns

Florals. A trend that everyone assumed had died back in the 1970s came rushing back this year. The truth is that for many people floral designs and greenery might sound outdated. However, some interior design ideas stand the test of time no matter what and floral centrepieces are proof of just that. You can pretty much apply this look to any style of home – from Scandinavian to Bohemian – as long as you use it with caution. This trend, it seems, has come back to stay, and it can let you create a chic home just by knowing what works in your space. From greenery to stunning floral designs, there’s certain to be something that suits your particular abode.

Rock an ultra-vintage theme in your home by incorporating flowers and greenery in your home décor. The flowers should complement your other interior decorating ideas in the best possible way. Unwritten rules about the way many of us decorate our homes dictate that trims should be painted in high gloss with ceilings in bright matt white, for example. But the truth is that you can be as creative with sheen as you are with colour and use it to your advantage. For instance, the chalky matt nature of Estate Emulsion would allow you to disguise uneven walls, while the new Modern Eggshell would allow you to highlight your favourite pieces of furniture. To explain the advantages of unusual use of sheen, we have put together a simple finishes guide, containing the basics of finishes and where to use them. Then we go on to explain how you can add a twist to your home with a little play with sheen.

Simple finishes guide:

Estate Emulsion creates the signature chalky matt finish, making it suitable for your interior walls and ceilings throughout the home.  (2% sheen)

Estate Eggshell is a very durable silk finish, especially suited to metal, wood and kitchen cabinets. (20% sheen)

Dead Flat is a traditional, very flat matt finish suited best to interior wood, plaster and metal surfaces. (2% sheen)

Modern Emulsion is a high performance interior walls and ceilings paint, and is the perfect alternative to Estate Emulsion due to its slightly higher sheen.  (7% sheen)

Modern Eggshell extremely durable mid sheen finish, especially suited to floors, staircases, kitchen cabinets and interior metal. (40% sheen)

Exterior Eggshell similar to Estate Eggshell, it is a very durable silk finish, but  suited best to exterior wood and metal. (20% sheen)

Full Gloss is the most durable high gloss finish, especially suited to interior and exterior wood and metal. (95% sheen)

WHAT TO PAINT

Front Doors are a brilliant place to start experimenting. Try Full Gloss finish with 95% sheen for a striking entrance or opt for a relaxed first expression with the not-so-bold Exterior Eggshell (20% sheen)

Furniture such as the outside of wardrobes or cupboards would look quirky with a flat matt on the outside – Dead Flat has only 5% finish, and Full Gloss within, adding a secret pocket of sheen.

Bathrooms & Kitchens are the place to use the mould resistant Modern Emulsion. Combine this hardy finish with Modern Eggshell on cabinetry and trim for a noticeable shift from matt walls to mid sheen woodwork.
